Rodeo Events
Mutton busting is one of the most popular family events at the River City Rodeo.
In this event, young children ride sheep and try to stay on as long as possible — just like the older competitors ride bulls and broncs.
It is designed specifically for kids and gives them a chance to experience rodeo in a safe, age-appropriate setting.
How Mutton Busting Works
Mutton busting is typically open to young children within a set age and weight range. Requirements vary by event, but most participants are between 4 and 7 years old and under a specific weight limit for safety.
Here’s how it works:
The child sits on the sheep inside the chute
The gate opens
The sheep runs forward
The child holds on as long as possible
The ride ends when the child falls off or the sheep slows to a stop.
Is Mutton Busting Safe?
Safety is the top priority in mutton busting.
Children wear protective helmets and vests
Arena staff are positioned nearby
The riding area is controlled and supervised
Medical personnel are on site
Parents or guardians must complete waivers before participation, and staff ensure that each child meets the event’s eligibility requirements.
How Mutton Busting Is Judged
Depending on the rodeo, mutton busting may be timed or scored based on performance.
Judges may look at:
How long the child stays on
Balance and position
Overall effort
Some events award prizes for longest ride, best effort, or overall participation.
At the River City Rodeo, the focus is on creating a positive and memorable experience for every participant
